Катерина Кожевникова (Intermediate) The holiday trip I will never forget (эссе, 2010)

I guess the best place I’ve ever been to is Saint-Petersburg. It’s such a beautiful and exciting city! I first went there in 2006 when my friend Lilya and I decided to spend our spring holidays in an incredible place. We went to a travel agency and asked a manager to choose a tour for us. She proposed a five-day programme called “Palace Necklace”. We liked it and bought the tickets for the train immediately.

It was a sunny May day, when we arrived at the railway station of Saint-Petersburg. We bought a city map and went to our hotel “Galakt”, where we met our guide Elena. We had breakfast and went on an excursion. The first excursion was named “Secrets of old St. Petersburg” and we visited Yusupov Palace. This place is famous for the fact that Grigori Rasputin was assassinated there. Now this is a museum. Then we went to the Cruiser Aurora. Our guide told us many interesting things about this place.

On the second day we had an excursion to the Palace-And-Park ensemble “Peterhof”. Peterhof is an internationally known suburban residence of Russian tsars. It’s a town of parks, palaces and fountains and one of the outstanding examples of park-palace landscape architecture. It is an incredible place located on a Gulf of Finland coast! We were surprised! I have never seen such a beautiful place! After our excursion we went for a walk along the city streets. There are many bridges, cannels, monuments and many other sights. St. Petersburg is a very spectacular city!

On the third day we went to the Peter and Paul Fortress. It was interesting to see the coffins of the tsars and a lot of churches. After this excursion we went for a walk again.

The next day we spent in the Tsarskoe Selo. This is a place where A.S. Pushkin the greatest Russian poet and writer lived and studied. After that, in the evening we went for a walk along the night city. We observed the drawbridges. It’s something amazing! We were surprised when we saw a lot of people watching it from both sides of the bridge. They applauded and photographed it.

On the last day of our stay in the city we visited the Hermitage. Probably it is the largest museum. There are many famous pictures and exhibits.

Next day we arrived home. It was sad to say goodbye to the most beautiful city in the world. Since my first trip to St. Petersburg I have been there twice. And each time it amazes me more and more. I love this town and I’d like to buy a house there. I do believe, St. Petersburg is worth visiting!
